ABOUT ISTV NETWORK

History of ISTV:

Cable television originated in 1940s as a service to households in mountainous or geographically remote areas in the states where reception of over-the air television signals was poor. Common antennas were erected on mountaintops or other high points, and homes were wired and connected to these towers to receive the broadcast signals. Such a system having common antenna was name as community antenna television commonly known as CATV. In the late 1950s when cable operators in the states began to take advantage of their ability to pickup broadcast signals from hundred of miles away, access to these distant signals changed the focus of cable's role from one of transmitting local broadcast signals to one of providing new programming choices. In 1972, Charles Dolan and Gerald Levin of sterling Manhattan Cable of US launched First Pay-TV Network, Home Box Office (HBO). This venture led to the creation of Satellite distribution system. Satellites changed the business dramatically, paving the way for the explosive growth of programme networks. The 1990s and beyond based on the alternative idea of targeting programming to a specific "Niche Audience" the number of cable programme networks exploded. In the US alone there were 139 cable programme services available nationwide, in adoption to many regional programming networks. As such spread worldwide India too caught up with the idea of blooming industry. The 1989 was the beginning of cable programming network in India. In April 1991 Murdoch's satellite television Asian region (STAR TV) had changed dramatically the cable Industry in India the way, what Manhattan Cable's HBO did in the US. It was estimated that the connectivity in India at the end of 2007 crossed over 70 million, through total private capital investment only. Smaller state like Manipur in NE India considered as having very poor infrastructure of communication and technology was not lagging behind in catching up this blooming technology. By the beginning 1990s many small cable operators established their own networks in each and every leikais providing about 5 to 10 FTA (Free to Air) channels including a video channel slowly. The 1995 was the period Cable Operator started facing pressure from the broadcaster. Most of the good channels FTA were slowly converted into pay-Channels. Individual cable operators with inadequate subscribers were the worst affected. Realising the strategy of broadcasters, many cable operators formed their own associations so as to meet the demand of pay-Channels. Those associations formed underwent many changes. The 1997s had brought a new era in Imphal city as two giant cable networks namely Satellite Education and Entertainment Network (SEEN TV) and Imphal Cable Television Network (ICTV) running parallel programmes with strong local programming contents contains, bringing a new wave to Imphal city. The unbearable demand of pay-channels made these two giant operators of Imphal and local pressures being faced awaken the two networks lately paving the way for unification. It was the beginning of 2003 January 27 history was created again. I from ICTV and S from SEEN TV the only single largest Cable Network in Manipur operated in Imphal known as "Information Service Television Network ISTV" was formed and recently celebrated her 5th Birthday on 27th of January 2008 with joy. The new millennium brought with hopes and plans for accelerating of advanced services over cable's networks. Cable operators with upgraded two-way plan have been witnessing dramatic growth in broadband. Cable has quickly become the technology of choice for tomorrow. Cable has quickly become the technology of choice for tomorrow. Many cable operators are offering video services such as Internet service, VOD, pay per view, live card games like blackjack and poker tournaments, on demand and interactive TV

At less than 60 years old, cable TV is still a very young industry. Nearly 70 million households in India are currently subscribed to cable with technology advancements allowing cable to reach every households everyday. Thanks to cable pioneers like Mr. Walson, Mr. Tarlton, Mr. Shapp and the foresight of HBO to deliver their signal by satellite, cable TV today provided World viewers with the greatest variety in programming available.

Contradictory to the trend of management of Manipur SPSEs (State Public Sector Entreprises), ISTV Network as a private sector enterprise, grows towards the pace of development.

And success of it goes to the functioning system of the network itself.

Being the Apex body of the cable operators in Manipur, ISTV Network functions under the Democratic system of governance.

The single voting right of each operator elect a 15 (fifteen) core members as “The Executive Committee”, at the General Body Meeting, which look after the management affairs of the network during their elected tenure.

With the involvement of various and series of gadgets and equipments in the type of services that the Network provide, the vital requirement of an expert and specialized personnel comes to the scene and such technicality leads to the appointment of 2 (two) Technicians.

And further, in the same General Body Meeting 2 (two) internal Auditors are also being appointed to facilitate authentic transparency of financial transaction of the network.

And amongst these, Executive committee 3 (three) members are further elected as the Chief Executive of the network as the President, the Secretary and the Treasurer
